CLTC Range vs Real World: How Far Your EV Actually Goes
A 600 km CLTC rating sounds like a road-trip machine. Then you drive one, and the trip computer tells a different story. The gap between CLTC range and real-world range is the single most common surprise for buyers of Chinese-market EVs — especially imported ones sold in Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia and beyond, where the sticker still quotes CLTC.
Why CLTC reads so high
CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) is built around urban Chinese driving: lots of low speed, gentle acceleration, and very little sustained highway running. High-speed cruising is exactly where EVs burn energy fastest, so a cycle that underweights it produces the most optimistic numbers of any major standard. That’s the CLTC range discrepancy in a nutshell — it isn’t cheating, it’s a test that doesn’t resemble how most people actually drive.
The realistic discount: expect 65–75%
As a practical rule, real-world range lands around 65–75% of the CLTC figure in mixed driving. The often-quoted Chinese folk rule is “打七折” — take 70%.
| CLTC rating | Realistic mixed driving (~70%) |
|---|---|
| 400 km | ~280 km |
| 500 km | ~350 km |
| 600 km | ~420 km |
| 700 km | ~490 km |
| 800 km | ~560 km |
Highway speeds, winter temperatures, or air conditioning can push the discount further — sustained 120 km/h driving in cold weather can halve a CLTC figure.
Comparing CLTC cars against WLTP or EPA rivals
The discount matters most when you cross-shop. A 600 km CLTC car is not longer-legged than a 500 km WLTP car — converted to the same scale (WLTP ≈ CLTC × 0.82), they’re nearly identical. Put both numbers through the CLTC to WLTP converter before you compare anything, or check the full CLTC guide for how the standard works.
The bottom line
Treat CLTC as a comparison index between cars tested on the same cycle, not a promise of distance. Convert to WLTP or EPA for cross-market comparisons, then apply a real-world discount for planning. Rated range is a lab number everywhere — CLTC is just the lab that flatters the most.
